Celebrating a faith filled life

Moldova in airplane mode

20140218-082738.jpg

“If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it? In the same way faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead by itself.” James 2:15-18

I finally figured out “airplane mode” on my phone so I am writing this blog from 30,000 feet. Looking at things from above gives things a different perspective. You can see a much bigger picture.
It was foggy the entire time we were in Moldova. These conditions were very unusual for them. In many ways….it seems very fitting. I think I was in a fog the entire trip. Trying to comprehend human trafficking leaves one in a dense fog. Vladimir, Director of Beginning of Life ministries helped us see things in airplane mode, getting above the situation to see the whole picture. I’ll come back to that thought in a minute.

I haven’t blogged since Friday so I will fill you in on our last couple of days. On Saturday we had the opportunity to do some touring of Moldova. We went to an operating monastery, visited a huge underground city featuring a winery. It was enormous. We attended what I would call “youth group”, another ministry of Beginning of Life. They do an incredible job ministering to many high risk teenagers. For dinner we went to Mall Dova, Moldova’s shopping mall. (Catchy title!). It looked very much like an American mall. It kind of gave me a pit in my stomach to be perfectly honest. Here amongst such great poverty is a rather upscale shopping mall…back to that dense fog of my mind again.

On Sunday we attended Church. We were blessed to have our fellow team member Jenni Clayville lead the worship team. Songs of praise were sang in both Russian and English. It was so powerful to praise God in multiple languages! Several of our team members shared testimonies and Vladimir delivered a powerful sermon on covenants. After the service I was able to talk with the precious girls from the Dream House. I was able to share with them that they are precious daughters of the Most High King, making them beautiful daughters of Him and royal princesses. I was able to look each of them in the eye during our “coranation” and tell them they are beautiful, loved, worthy daughters of God.

We spend the rest of the day meeting with Vladimir and Serghei, talking about all that we had seen and experienced this week. It was during our talks that I began to see through the fog and could get in airplane mode, seeing the bigger picture. Beginning of Life has dealt with, researched, and ministered to victims of human trafficking for over 13 years. They continue to put into action what they have learned, to not only minister to the victims of this horrific tragedy but to diligently educate and develop prevention programs. It is an incredible prayer built vision…when you get above it.

I’m doing a little bible study with some of the girls from church. We are in James chapter 2 this week. The verse above is one that I was studying today. Faith must have works or it is dead.

We just landed….clear skies in Orlando. The fog has lifted…I can clearly see its time for action. I hope you will continue to journey with me in the days and weeks ahead as we continue to look at things in airplane mode.

Happy Valentines Day! Loving others…….Jesus style

20140215-025931.jpg

36 “Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?” Jesus answered:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, “Love others as much as you love yourself.” Matthew 22:36-39

Happy Valentines Day from Moldova!
I love Valentines Day! I mean how can a day focused on love be anything but good! I have such fond memories of Valentine’s Day as a kid, making special Valentines for my friends and making a valentine box. Valentines day was also Mom’s birthday. I sure thought of her a lot today. I miss her.
We started our day at the Beginning of Life Psychological Art Studio. It is an amazing center that combines art with psychological care. Victims of sex trafficking and domestic violence find a safe haven here. I can’t begin to do this place justice in writing. It is one of those places that you just have to experience!
The hearts in the picture were made by some of the girls at the center. My mom loved to do arts and crafts. She made hearts very similar to the ones in the picture. She also loved girls having four daughters! She would have such a heart for the sweet Moldovan girls who have endured so much! As I remembered mom today, my heart went out to these precious girls. Not only have they endured the horrors of human trafficking, many of them are orphans and are without family support. However, they are so blessed to have the staff of beginning of life ministries. The staff here loves these girls with the love of Christ. They love them like they are their own daughters. It is such a blessing to see.

This afternoon we did home visits. Our group broke into teams. Our team consisted of myself, Rolando, Olga (a social worker) and Serge, one of the staff members at Beginning of Life. We stopped at the grocery store and picked up some groceries to take on the home visit. We traveled to one of the villages which was a 90 minute drive from the city. The woman we visited has a horrific story. She is a victim of human trafficking. She grew up in an orphanage and was sexually abused as a child. When she was old enough to leave the orphanage she was an ideal target for human trafficking. She was trafficked in at least three different countries. Two years ago she was in Turkey and discovered that she was both pregnant and had HIV. Turkey deported her because of the HIV and so she returned to Moldova. Beginning of life ministries worked with the church in her village and helped her find a place to live. She lives in a very, very, very small home with her two-year-old daughter. The people in the village learned that she has HIV and want nothing to do with her. She is completely isolated. The only visitor she has is Olga. Olga is a precious woman of God. She loves with the love of Jesus unconditionally. During the time that she has been visiting her she has come to know Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Praise God! Even though she's completely isolated, she is never alone!

On the drive back to the city, I was feeling very overwhelmed by everything that we had seen and experienced. On one hand I have never visited anyone with such a horrific story. On the other hand, I have never seen the love of Jesus Christ so clearly demonstrated as I witnessed through Olga. The Holy Spirit is so evident in every staff member at Beginning of Life ministries.
Tonight we went to a birthday party for one of the girls at the House of Change, which is the house where the girls live who are victims of human trafficking. What a beautiful celebration they had for this 18-year-old girl! Moldovans do know how to celebrate! Food, dancing, gifts! They presented her with a bracelet and each of us was able to present her with a charm and give her a blessing. They presented her with a beautiful tiara and declared her a princess of the Most High King! The horrors this precious daughter has endured are unthinkable…but for tonight…You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever. /em> Psalm 30:11-12

Yes, it has been quite a Valentines Day.

Moldova Hope, Patience and Prayer

20140213-224850.jpg

Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lack diligence, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer. Romans 12:9-12

Today was another full day in Moldova! We started out the day by doing some teaching in the public schools. Our team of eight broke into three teams and went to three separate schools. Our team went to a Russian high school. We had wonderful Moldovan hosts, Sergiu and Ecaterina (our interpreter). For those of you who have heard me speak, and know my Slllooooooow doooown story, you can imagine that Ecaterina had her work cut out for her keeping up with my fast speaking pace! Michael Vinson, Vice President of Children’s Hope Chest was on our team. We spoke to four different classes for about 45 minutes in each class. We shared with them about our families, our lives and about American culture. We then had the opportunity for them to share with us about what they like about their culture. It was great to listen to them talk about the importance of their relationships and their traditions.
For lunch, we went to La Placinta, a great Moldovan restaurant. I would love to tell you what I ordered, except I don’t remember it’s name! It was some kind of lasagna type dish only instead of noodles it had a pancake and chicken in it. It was great! Serving sizes are very generous here as you can tell from Michael’s photo below.

Next we were back to the urban center to work with the program “Way to Success.” This is a prevention program that works with the students to help influence and shape this generation of Moldovans. We also learned about a magazine that is published for Moldovan teens called “Escape”. It is a wonderful magazine with many articles that are relevant to the Moldovan teen culture. Our interpreter, Ecaterina, is the editor of the magazine. It was fun to see her in her work environment!

20140213-232520.jpg

After dinner we returned back to our hotel, did some preparations for events for tomorrow, and then had a little time to myself to try to process some things. I’m not certain one can “process” human trafficking. I guess in many ways it is futile to try to make sense of such evil. And yet awareness of this terrible tragedy is so important to be able to work towards solutions and prevention. Beginning of Life ministries is doing a great job of keeping up to the ever changing face of Human trafficking.
The Lord has been so sweet and so near to me during my quiet time tonight. I have heard Him speak during the reading of His Word tonight. I have heard Him speak in His still small voice during sweet sacred times of prayer. I have heard Him speak through the encouraging notes that dear friends sent with me to read, I have heard Him speak as I recall conversations with our Moldova team and with the staff at Beginning of Life ministries, I have heard Him speak through many sweet texts and messages. I have experienced His incredible peace through your faithful prayers! And I have seen him in the eyes of the sweet girls of Moldova.
Thank you for your faithful prayers! Please keep it up!!!

Hope for Moldova

20140212-231114.jpg

Wow!!! What a FULL day we have had. There is so much to process. The morning started with learning the history of Moldova and how the country has gotten to the state that it is in. This is a crucial piece in understanding how sex trafficking has gotten so out of control here. Vladimir shared such startling and disturbing statistics with us and painted the picture of the many challenges Moldova faces. Even with all of its struggles and challenges, Vladimir is full of hope and confidence of all that God will do here.
Next we went to the urban center, which focuses on empowering youth for better future They have so many great programs here and I will write a future blog focusing on the programs that happen the urban center.
After lunch we went to the House of Change which is the rehabilitation center for the victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. We will be interacting with the girls from that house on Friday.
Next we were on to the Dream House. The Dream House is a prevention Center for at risk girls ages 14 to 17. We had the blessing of being able to talk with and interact with the girls. Their beautiful picture is above. Some of these girls are orphans, having lost both parents. Other girls might be social orphans, where they come from a single-parent family and that parent is out of the country working. The parent may be gone for years without seeing their child and the child is living on their own. This obviously puts them at risk for human trafficking. I was overwhelmed with emotion while at the dream house, thinking of the girls and what their lives would be like if they didn’t have this place to live. I am so thankful for Beginning of Life ministries and all they are doing in Moldova. Their mission is to

restore God’s original intent for his creation, simultaneously transforming people physically and spiritually and integrating them into society.

</block-quote

We had the opportunity to share with the girls that they are dearly loved by God that they are worthy because of His great love for them. Please pray for these precious daughters of the Most High King. Pray that they begin to know and understand how dearly loved they are and embrace the Gospel message.

Tomorrow we are off to teach in the public schools. Our team will be breaking into three separate teams My team will be going to a Russian speaking school. We will meet with four different classes and have 45 minutes which each class. I'm excited! They are very interested in the American culture. Please pray for God's words to be spoken clearly through each of us.

I have so much more to say, but my eyelids are getting a little heavy. I think the time change is beginning to catch up with me! I can't put into words how much I appreciate all of your prayers! Thank you for approaching the throne of grace on our behalf! Please pray for the precious children of Moldova.

Welcome to Moldova!

20140212-004800.jpg

We have arrived at Chisinau, Moldova! We are so thankful to be on the ground, our plane landed in very dense fog after circling the airport for an hour and a half! The entire plane burst into cheers and clapping when the pilot safely landed us. Praise God! There was a whole a lot of praying going on! We were greeted at the airport by our host Vladimir. He is great! The team is also real blessing! I feel like we’ve known each other for a long time already. My friend Jenni took the above picture at a coffee shop in the Istanbul airport.

So I’m attempting to write this blog from my phone! Those of you that know me will find this hilarious as I am quite technologically challenged with both the phone and the blogging. The blog site said quick and easy set up in five minutes. That was two weeks ago and it took me that long to finally get it figured out! I’m not much better with my “smart phone” , which is of course smarter than I am. My phone calls people that I don’t mean to, texts people cryptic messages, autoCorrect’s most things that I type into some hilarious meaning that I never intended. You get the picture. this is kind of a challenge for me. The other night I was at our evening church service. The room was in low lighting to set the worshipful mood. All of a sudden my phone decided to go into flashlight mode! You need to understand, I can’t turn the flashlight on my phone if I want to! So there we were in this beautiful dark worshipful settings and my flashlight is shining all over the room! I tried to sit on it, cover it up, do all kinds of things to block the light but it didn’t seem to do any good! Finally my sweet friend Emily turned off the flashlight for me.

Light is a beautiful thing, how it penetrates the darkness. That is one of my prayers for this week. That the light of Jesus Christ shines so brightly through our team. That every word and deed are done for His glory. That His light penetrates. Praying for ears that listen with His compassion, eyes that see the things that He sees, hugs that extend the love of Jesus Christ. Praying that he uses us to be that flashlight this week! I read in my Bible study this week that “To act in Jesus’s name is to act for Him and his cause and to depend completely on His power”. We certainly are completely dependent on His power! Praise God!

Tomorrow will be a very full day. I hope to post tomorrow night and tell you some of the amazing things God is doing in Moldova. Thanks so much for the prayers, keep it up! Blessings to you!!

Here I am Lord, send me

And the journey begins

Drumroll please!

We gave away a trip to Moldova at the Proverbs 31 Ministries She Speak’s Conference….

And the winner is….

Holly Gallagher!

Holly is a frequent speaker at women’s and youth conferences, Holly is passionate about sharing Christ’s love with those she meets, using her gifts of encouragement, humor and enthusiasm.

Mother of three and wife to Lynn, Holly is a midwesterner at heart. She grew up in North Iowa and at the moment is knee-deep in boxes as her family prepares to move to Florida.

Holly, we are excited to have you on the Moldova Trip. Congratulations!

Thank you to everyone that entered!!

For more information about upcoming Vision Trips, visit: http://bit.ly/CHC-VT

This was the post on Children’s Hope Chest’s Facebook page in August. However, actually the journey begins in July at the Proverbs 31 She Speaks Conference that I had the blessing of attending. It was there that I heard the vision of Children’s Hope Chest. During one of the main sessions we watched a video about their ministry to victims of human trafficking in Moldova. It absolutely broke my heart. It was announced that one of the conference attendees would be winning a trip to Moldova. I remember tears welling up in my eyes and praying, “Lord, here I am. Send me. If you want me to go….send me.”

And here I am…..72 hours away from the Moldova trip and writing my first blog post. In 72 hours I will meet in person the 7 others that God has called to this team and we will travel to Moldova. My heart is so full right now it is hard to put into words (not good when you are trying to write a blog). I am thankful and humbled at the opportunity to serve. My heart is already broken by just the small amount that I have learned about human trafficking and about Moldova.

Moldova is the poorest country in Europe
30,000 girls and women have disappeared without a trace
More than 100,000 people are victims of human trafficking
One of the greatest targets for sex trafficking are girls who leave the orphanages

I invite you to take this journey with me. In the days ahead we will be loving on girls who have been rescued from human trafficking, we will visit a rehabilitation house, participate in prevention programs, worship, learn about Moldovan culture, learn about Beginning of Life Moldova ( a HopeChest partner) and most of all we will share the love of Jesus with everyone we meet. I invite you to come along through prayer and through this blog. Here we are Lord…..send us.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8
